This evening I visited Sunrise Records located at Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke. I decided to browse through there used Vinyl section, and all I can say is what a disaster. Prices that ranged from $2.00 - $40.00. What person in their right mind is going to pay $40.00 for a used LP? The two albums that I found grossly overpriced were Supertramp “Crime of the Century” and Sir Paul McCartney’s “Gatefold”
I have done my research on these albums, looked up competitive prices via EBay, Amazon, etc.., and the price point just don’t add up. How can you charge someone $40.00 for an album I can buy it now on EBay for a price of $15.00 or even cheaper depending on the copy. My other big issue I have is there is no guarantee on what condition the album is actually in, there is no place in the store to check the quality. So tell me is it worth a $40.00 gamble on an album that could have potential scratches and marks on it, when you can just purchase a new one for under $30.00? I would rather take the risk of purchasing a used one off EBay at a lower price point and have some type of guarantee from the seller.
Sadly Supertramp album wasn’t the worst part of the visit; it was actually the Sir Paul McCartney album “Gatefold”. As I continued browsing through there used section, I came across Gatefold and saw the second price tag of $40.00 in the used section and was like “You got to be kidding me!” At that point I gave up looking through there used Vinyl’s and decided to browse through their new LP’s and guess what I found? A brand new copy of Sir Paul McCartney’s “Gatefold” and the price you might be curious on how much it was? $36.99... Wait what? The new copy was cheaper than the used one! I scratched my head for a minute trying to wrap my head around this, who is pricing these used records out? Why are these prices so high? I have bought used Vinyl from Sunrise Records at Cloverdale Mall located in Etobicoke before and have been really happy with my purchases.
The only thing positive I have to say about my visit to Sherway’s Sunrise Records is the retail customer service; I was approached right away and asked if I needed assistance. At that time I inquired about the Supertramp album and why is it so expensive, considering it was a used album. Both sales associates explained to me they don’t have anything to do directly with the prices and that they have a purchaser from corporate who prices out there used section. I nodded my head politely and continued browsing.
If I may make a suggestion to Sunrise corporate who make decision’s with their used Vinyl’s and purchasing them, whatever price you purchase a record at you should be selling at double what you pay for it. Example of this if you buy a used album for let’s say $10.00, you should be selling it at $15.00-$20.00 not $40.00.
